Then I mentioned the wedding venue.
“The invitation says they’re getting married at the lake.”
Diane stopped speaking.
Finally, she said:
“Thomas, that property belongs to me.”
My maternal grandparents had left the cabin and surrounding three acres exclusively to Diane.
The deed was registered in her name.
No other relatives had ownership rights.
Several years earlier, after developing heart problems, Diane had updated her estate documents.
She named me as her sole beneficiary for the property and gave me authority to assist with financial matters if her health deteriorated.
I was stunned.
“You never told me.”
“I wanted you to have your own life without worrying about inheritance.”
Then she explained what had happened.
Cheryl had contacted her months earlier, asking to hold Megan’s wedding beside the lake.
Diane considered the request but ultimately declined.
She informed Cheryl of her decision twice, including in writing.
Yet Ray had apparently ignored her.
