When he believed everyone had escaped, he searched the aircraft one final time.
That’s when he heard crying.
A small boy was trapped beneath a seat.
His safety belt had jammed during the impact.
Smoke was thickening.
Dad took out his pocketknife, cut the strap, and pulled the boy free.
“He was trembling,” Dad recalled. “He wrapped his arms around my neck and wouldn’t let go.”
Dad removed his uniform jacket, wrapped Michael inside it, and carried him across the snow.
A farmer’s son photographed them.
By the following morning, their picture appeared in newspapers across America.
People called Dad a hero.
He hated the attention.
“Every photograph of me reminded me that Ruth wasn’t there to see another morning,” he explained.
Unfortunately, the story didn’t end with the rescue.
Two weeks later, investigators and airline representatives began questioning his decisions.
Why had he chosen that particular field?
