El proyecto de ley llegó en dos cuotas separadas, y mi esposo se dio cuenta del problema demasiado tarde.

My sister-in-law set up an account.

-What is this?

“Lo que comiste,” le respondí.

Chris se inclinó hacia mí.

—¿Por qué estás haciendo esto hoy?

I looked at him.

—Because you said paying is always “easier.” I want to know for whom.

Then I remembered a joke I had heard for months.

—Credit card with legs.

This time no one laughed.

My father-in-law, who had been looking through the bills until then, not fully understanding the discussion, raised his head.

—Is that what they call you?

Chris didn’t answer.

Su padre lo miró de nuevo.

—¿Has permitido esto todo este tiempo?

Chris took a breath.

And then he did something that convinced me that I still didn’t understand what was happening.

He moved his account a few centimeters towards me.

He didn’t say he would pay.

He didn’t apologize.

He didn’t ask if he could help me.
