Ella estaba llorando.

Ella caminó hacia mí lentamente.

“Margaret?”

I recognized her only after she said my name.

“Janice?”

She covered her mouth.

“Oh my goodness.”

Twelve years earlier, Janice had come into the credit union where I worked.

I remembered pieces of that day.

A mortgage several months behind.

A folder full of documents.

A frightened woman who didn’t know what to do.

Her husband’s business had collapsed, and they were weeks away from foreclosure.

“I couldn’t understand the hardship paperwork,” Janice said through her tears.

“You stayed anyway. Then you called me after work for days until we finally got everything approved.”

Me sacudí la cabeza.

“I was doing my job.”

“No,” Janice said. “Your shift ended.”

Algunos invitados se rieron suavemente.

“You stayed anyway.”

I barely remembered it.

But Janice did.

“We have your photograph on our mantel.”

“My photograph?”

She nodded.

“You received a community service award afterward.”

I remembered a community dinner.

Barely.

“The photo is framed with a little brass plate underneath it,” Janice said.

She looked toward the guests.

“Margaret — Community Service Award.”

My stomach tightened.

Then Ethan turned toward Lauren.

His expression changed.

“So tell me something.”

Lauren looked at him.

“You’ve been in my parents’ house dozens of times.”

Her face went white.

“Did you know who your mother was to my family?”

Lauren didn’t answer.

“Lauren”.

Her lips trembled.

“You saw the photograph?”

– Sí.

“And her name?”

Lauren nodded.

– Sí.

Nobody moved.

Ethan stared at her.

“How long?”

“Months.”

“Then why have you spent all this time making sure I never met her?”

Lauren wiped her face.

– Porque he mentido.

“No sabía cómo arreglarlo”.

Ethan la miró.

“¿Arreglar qué?”

Lauren me miró.

No dije nada.
