I opened the folder.
—Esta es la escritura de la casa —dije con calma. “Mi nombre está registrado legalmente junto a la de mamá y papá”.
I explained how my father’s business had failed and how I’d prevented foreclosure.
I laid out the records showing the $76,400 I’d contributed from Mara’s insurance proceeds.
Then I showed them the mortgage payments.
“Altogether, I’ve put $136,410 into this house.”
Charles looked stunned.
I placed the quitclaim document on the table.
“And this is what Dad wanted me to sign tonight.”
Brooks picked it up.
After reading several lines, he handed it to his father.
Charles adjusted his glasses and carefully studied both pages.
Then he looked toward me.
“I served as a circuit court judge in Richmond for twenty-two years,” he said.
He placed the document down.
“Wes, don’t sign this.”
“I won’t.”
Charles turned toward Dad.
