Eventually I delivered Rosie and held her. She looked so tiny and beautiful that my thoughts instinctively searched for the next moments we’d anticipated: her first cry, a movement, Owen remarking that she had my eyes.
Instead, everything remained silent. I memorized her features, terrified that I might forget them. I told her I loved her and wished I could have given her more time. Owen gently touched her small hand. Together we sat in a world that seemed to have stopped moving.
The chairs reserved for my parents stayed empty. Because they’d promised to come, I continued listening for them even while holding Rosie for the last time. They were somewhere else when we needed them most.
That evening, exhausted and disoriented, I checked my phone. Kelsey’s Instagram story showed golden decorations, smiling attendees, and my parents standing together at her wedding rehearsal dinner.
I called Mom, who lowered her voice. “Natalie, we’re in the middle of dinner.”
