She walked all the way to the front of the stage. To the microphone. Right into the light.
Somewhere in the back of the auditorium, a boy’s voice said, loud enough for people to hear, “Nice dress, Goodwill.”
A couple of kids laughed.
Annie froze. I saw her hands start to shake.
Lily se levantó.
No sé qué iba a hacer. No creo que ella lo supiera. Ella simplemente se puso de pie en el medio de la fila, en el medio del auditorio, y se dio la vuelta y miró a la parte posterior de donde había venido la voz.
And then Teresa stood up next to her.
And then, before I could think about it, I stood up too.
Three of us, standing in the middle of the auditorium while everyone else sat. Staring at the back row.
The laughing stopped.
Alguien susurró: “Siéntate, Trevor”.
