She had Michael’s face.
Me alejé de la puerta. No creo haber dicho “entra”.
The woman’s name was Teresa Hale.
She sat on the edge of my couch with her hands folded in her lap. Annie sat next to her, very close. Neither of them took their coats off.
The gold watch was there, with its cracked crystal.
And under it, folded tight, was a wad of money. Twenties and tens and fives, held together with a hair tie. And a piece of notebook paper.
“Son mil mil cuarenta y cuarenta dólares”, dijo Teresa. “Lo conté dos veces”.
Lily’s coffee can money. Her New York money. Two years of hems and zippers and prom dresses.
“And this,” Teresa said, and handed me the note.
The money is for whatever you need. I know it’s not enough. I’m sorry it’s not more.
I’m sorry about a lot of things that aren’t even my fault.
Tu hermana,
Lily
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
Our dad.
Your sister.
There was no mistake.
“I worked nights cleaning the building where Michael worked,” Teresa said. She was talking to the coffee table, not to me. “Seventeen years ago. He used to stay late. We’d talk. He was kind to me. Nobody in that building ever talked to the cleaning lady, but he did.”
No he dicho nada. No podía.
“It went on for four months. Maybe five. Then he ended it. He said he loved his wife. He said he’d made a terrible mistake.” She swallowed. “Two weeks later, I found out I was pregnant.”
