He placed it on the kitchen table.
I remember thinking it was probably another document from work.
Marcus had been unusually distracted lately.
He’d spent more evenings at the office.
Sometimes he took his phone into the garage to answer calls.
And there were nights when he seemed physically present but mentally somewhere else.
I’d told myself he was stressed.
That his job was demanding.
That perhaps we simply needed a weekend away together.
Then he sat across from me.
“Eleanor, we need to talk.”
Something in his voice made me nervous.
“About what?”
He glanced at the folder.
“No creo que estemos destinados a envejecer juntos”.
I stared at him.
For a moment, I thought he was joking.
“What?”
He looked down.
“I think our marriage has run its course.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Marcus, what are you talking about?”
“We’ve changed.”
“Of course we’ve changed. We’ve been together for more than two decades.”
