“¿Qué quieres decir con que no vas?”
Sophie and I stared at each other because neither of us had ever known Dean was supposed to join them. During six years of grieving beside me, he had never once mentioned that Daniel had invited him on the fishing trip.
On the video, Dean explained that his girlfriend had left him three months earlier and that spending a weekend fishing wasn’t going to fix anything. Daniel disagreed, telling his brother that sitting alone wouldn’t help either, before encouraging him one more time to come with them.
When Dean refused again, Daniel picked up another life jacket and checked its buckle. Then he said something that made my entire body go cold.
“Kids don’t remember every expensive thing you buy them, Dean. They remember whether you came back.”
We drove there hoping someone might remember him, although six years had passed. An older employee studied the photograph I had taken in our driveway and immediately recognized our three sons because they had spent nearly ten minutes arguing over which colors of emergency whistles they wanted.
The employee remembered Daniel buying one orange whistle for each boy. More importantly, he remembered something that had never appeared in the official investigation.
“And another adult flotation vest.”
I frowned because Daniel already owned one.
“Said his brother might meet them.”
I drove directly to Dean’s house with Daniel’s phone in my hand. The moment he opened the door and saw it, his expression changed as though I were holding something he had hoped would remain buried forever.
“You were supposed to go.”
