Dean finally admitted that he had changed his mind on Sunday morning and started driving toward the lake. Before he arrived, emergency vehicles passed him on the road, and by the time he reached the area, the search operation had already begun.
For six years, Dean had attended birthdays, dinners, and school events with us while carrying that secret. When I demanded to know why he had never told me, he said he had spent every day wondering whether another adult on the boat might have changed what happened.

“You didn’t get to decide what I could carry.”

That answer created a new question neither of us could ignore. If Dean had never boarded Daniel’s boat, then the extra adult flotation vest should still have been among the equipment recovered after the accident.

Part 3: What They Did Before They Disappeared
Once we knew the spare adult flotation vest and one orange whistle were missing, the old recovery inventory suddenly became important again. A retired search coordinator agreed to review the records with us, and after comparing the recovered equipment with what Daniel had purchased before the trip, he noticed something investigators could not have understood six years earlier because they had never known exactly what Daniel had packed.
Then the coordinator found another report from the afternoon Daniel and the boys disappeared. A small boat carrying an older man and his grandson had capsized on the same lake when the weather deteriorated.
“¿Sobrevivieron?”
“Both of them.”
I gripped the edge of the table as another question immediately formed.
“Who helped them?”
The coordinator searched through the original statements before finding the answer. According to the report, another fishing boat had reached the stranded pair before official rescuers arrived, and witnesses described one adult accompanied by several boys.
