Lo tenían.
God help me, they had.
“You wait,” I said.
He raised his eyes to mine.
“You give me a number that actually reaches you. You do not come to my house. You do not contact my children. You do not send lawyers. You do not send investigators. You wait until I decide what is safe for them.”
“Safe from me?”
“Yes,” I replied. “From the chaos you bring.”
His lips parted, but no words followed.
I took out my phone and asked for his number. He gave it to me. I didn’t call him. I simply saved it under his name, although my fingers trembled slightly as I typed.
Then I turned and climbed into the Bentley.
The boys immediately gathered around me.
“Mom, who was that?” Noah asked.
I fastened Eli’s seat belt before answering.
“Someone I used to know.”
Noah studied my face carefully. “He made you sad.”
