Mi madre envió un mensaje de texto para decir que mi hija de ocho años y yo no éramos bienvenidos en la cena de Navidad porque los futuros suegros de mi hermana necesitaban los asientos.

Ainsley approached wearing an enormous smile.

“Wes! So glad you came.”

She leaned close and whispered:

“Don’t embarrass us today.”

Then she introduced us to the Pembertons.

“Wes and Luna will be eating in the breakfast room. Luna prefers somewhere quieter.”

Before I could respond, Luna noticed something on Marian’s sweater.

A gold brooch shaped like a moth.

She stared at it, fascinated.

Then she spoke.

“That’s a cecropia moth. Or at least it’s modeled after one. Real cecropia moths have different colors along their wings.”

Ainsley’s expression tightened.

“Luna, Mrs. Pemberton doesn’t need—”

But Marian interrupted.

“You’re absolutely right, sweetheart.”

She knelt beside my daughter.

“My brother made this for me many years ago. He was a jeweler, and he loved moths.”

Luna’s eyes widened.

“Really?”

Marian smiled.

“Really. Would you like to tell me more about them?”

My daughter opened her notebook.
