“La gente piensa que las polillas son aburridas”, explicó. “Pero eso es porque no miran con cuidado”.
I smiled.
She was right about more than moths.
Then she asked:
“Daddy, are we going to Grandma’s for Christmas?”
“I think so, sweetheart.”
“Will you sit beside me this year?”
My heart tightened.
The previous Christmas, I’d spent almost the entire dinner in the kitchen preparing food.
Luna had eaten by herself while everyone else enjoyed the meal.
By the time I’d finally sat down, most guests had already left the dining room.
“Of course I’ll sit with you,” I promised.
– ¿En la mesa grande?
I hesitated.
That was all she wanted.
Not an expensive present.
Not a vacation.
Just a seat beside her father.
I couldn’t bring myself to promise something I wasn’t sure my family would allow.
So I asked her to show me another drawing.
