Teresa asintió. Sostuvo la caja contra su pecho.
Entonces ella me miró, y su cara estaba tan llena de cosas que no podía nombrar.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “For all of it. I know I don’t have the right to say that to you.”
I didn’t answer. I couldn’t.
She took Annie’s hand, and they walked down the porch steps and out to an old silver car with a cracked taillight.
Cerré la puerta.
Entonces me di la vuelta y miré a mi hija.
“Two months,” I said.
Lily estaba sentada en el escalón inferior donde yo había estado. Estaba abrazando las rodillas.
“You’ve known for two months.”
– Sí.
– Y no me lo dijiste.
– No.
“¿Por qué no?”
She didn’t answer right away. She picked at a thread on her pajama pants.
“Lily. Why not?”
“Because of how you get,” she said quietly.
