“Did you know about Annie?” I said.
I watched it happen. Her face didn’t change at first. Then her hand moved slowly to the collar of her blouse, the way it always did when she was upset. And she looked out the window at the parking lot.
“Who told you?” she asked quietly.
That was all I needed.
– Tú lo sabías -dije-.
“Beth…”
– Tú lo sabías. ¿Por cuánto tiempo?”
Estuvo en silencio durante mucho tiempo.
“Desde el principio”, dijo. “Él vino a mí cuando se enteró de que la mujer estaba embarazada. Era un desastre. No sabía qué hacer. Me preguntó si debía decírtelo”.
– ¿Y qué dijiste?
Ruth miró su crucigrama.
“Le dije que no”, dijo ella. “Estabas embarazada de Lily. Estabas tan enferma ese año. Le dije que te rompería. Le dije que cuidara del niño, en silencio, y nunca dejara que tocara a su familia”.
