Ella se cubrió la cara.
“Y Trevor empezó a reír. Y él dijo: ‘La buena voluntad ni siquiera quiere que me haga la mano, Lily’. Y todos se reían de ella. En ella. Por mi culpa”.
I thought of Lily coming up the stairs with her swollen eyes.
Please, Mom. Leave it.
“Me fui a casa”, dijo Annie, “y le dije a mi madre lo que dijo Lily. Pensé que diría que Lily estaba loca”. Miró a su madre. “Ella no dijo nada. Se sentó en la mesa de la cocina y empezó a llorar. Y luego me contó todo”.
“At two in the morning,” Teresa said quietly. “When I got home from my shift. I couldn’t lie to her anymore. Not after that girl put her whole savings in a box.”
“I kept the sweater,” Annie said, touching the cardigan. “I don’t know why. I threw the dress, but I kept the sweater on. I didn’t even think about it.”
Miré el cárdigan. El pequeño agujero cerca del puño izquierdo.
“He bought that,” I said. “For Lily. The last Christmas.”
Annie looked down at it. Her face went white.
“Oh,” dijo ella. – Oh, no. Ella comenzó a quitárselo. “Lo siento. Lo devolveré. No lo sabía...”
– No lo hagas -dije-.
I don’t know why I said it. It just came out.
She stopped with one arm half out of the sleeve.
“Lily quería que lo tuvieras”, le dije. – Mantenlo puesto.
Fue entonces cuando oí las escaleras crujir.
Lily estaba de pie en la parte superior de la escalera en pijama. Su pelo era un desastre. Sus ojos seguían hinchados. Ella sostenía la barandilla.
I don’t know how long she’d been there. Long enough. I could see it in her face.
Annie stood up. Then sat back down. Then stood up again.
For a long moment, nobody said anything.
Then Annie said, “I’m sorry.”
Her voice broke on it.
Lily bajó las escaleras lentamente. Se detuvo en el escalón inferior, justo a mi lado. Ella no me miró. Miró a Annie.
– Lo siento -dijo Annie de nuevo-. “Lo siento mucho. No sabía. No lo sabía, Lily”.
“I know you didn’t,” Lily said quietly. “I should’ve told you a different way. I’m bad at stuff like that. I thought if I made you something nice first, you’d… I don’t know. Like me first. Before you found out.”
