“So you just left?”
He nodded.
“I was young, frightened, and too afraid to stand up to them.”
Me sacudí la cabeza.
– Podrías habérmelo dicho.
“I should have.”
“You had thirty years.”
“I know.”
I looked at the photograph again.
For a moment, I saw the boy I’d once loved.
Then I looked at the man he’d become.
“Why now?”
Peter inhaled slowly.
“Because I found out Marcus was betraying you.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“Three months ago, I was in Chicago for a business dinner. Marcus was sitting two tables away with another woman.”
I stared at him.
He continued.
“They weren’t behaving like coworkers. He was holding her hand.”
The words struck hard.
“Who was she?”
“I don’t know her personally. But I had someone investigate because I wanted to be sure I wasn’t misreading the situation.”
“You investigated my husband?”
