She had relatives, but none lived nearby.
"You need help."
"I have help."
Her eyes moved toward me.
I didn't understand at first.
Entonces, lo hice.
Tenía un dormitorio libre.
I worked from home.
And every time I looked at Susan sitting alone in that house, I thought about my mother telling all of us that she was fine.
So I made the offer.
"Come stay with me."
Susan stared at me.
"No".
"No puedes estar solo".
"Yo me las arreglaré".
"That's exactly what my mother used to say."
Something changed in her expression.
I didn't understand why.
After a long silence, she whispered, "Alright."
Susan's relatives arrived only after a neighbor managed to contact them.
They came angry.
Greg, her son, demanded that Susan return home.
Marcy, her daughter-in-law, accused me of isolating her.
Another relative called me a manipulator.
