I couldn’t breathe.

“What do you mean?” I heard myself say. “Do we know each other?”

He reached into his coat. His fingers were shaking so badly it took him three tries to find the inside pocket.

“Te he estado buscando durante años, Lucy”, dijo. “Casi me había rendido”.

Sacó algo de su bolsillo. Un sobre. Viejo y amarillo, suave en los bordes, doblado por la mitad, con una mancha de café en una esquina.

I didn’t take it.

I just stared at it. At the envelope in his shaking hand.

It was my mother’s handwriting.

I knew it the way you know your own face. The way she made her L’s with a little loop at the bottom. The way her Y dropped low below the line. I’d seen that handwriting on every birthday card, every lunch box note, every grocery list stuck to the fridge for twenty-six years.
