Finally, he drove toward the house.
Ron climbed out and stood silently in the yard.
His gaze moved from the porch to the cistern.
Then toward an empty patch of ground where an old machinery shed had once stood.
It was as though he could still see his father’s equipment waiting to be sold.
Nate approached.
– Papá.
Ron lo miró.
“You bought this place.”
– Sí.
“Y nunca me lo dijiste”.
“No sabíamos que pertenecía al abuelo Henry. Nadie lo ha mencionado nunca”.
Ron asintió lentamente.
Opal entered the house, followed by Judy.
Soon, I heard Judy crying inside.
Ron remained outside with us.
He examined the renovated electrical system and the sagging porch.
“You did all that work yourself?” he asked Nate.
“After my regular shifts.”
Ron se volvió hacia mí.
“Y Judy te vio trabajando en ese restaurante de parada de camiones. Pensé que debía haberse equivocado”.
