It started with pills. A back injury on the fishing boat. A doctor who handed out painkillers like candy. Then the prescription ran out, and the pills got expensive, and somebody at the docks knew somebody who sold something cheaper.
“I’m not going to tell you it wasn’t my fault,” Ray said. “It was. Every choice was mine. I just didn’t know at the beginning that each choice made the next one smaller.”
