When I was little, I used to trace it with my finger when she tucked me in at night.

“What’s the bird for, Mama?”

And she’d pull her sleeve down over it, and smile, and say, “That’s a story for when you’re older.”

The old man stood frozen at the door. His hand was still on the handle. He was looking at me with an expression I couldn’t read.

Brenda walked over to my station. She took my arm. Not hard. But firm.

“Lucy,” dijo en voz baja. “No seas ridículo”.

“Son cinco minutos. Voy a hacer un recorte rápido”.

“No puede pagar”.

“I know.”

“Then the cut comes out of your pay.” She said it loud enough for everyone to hear. “Fifty dollars. Plus I want the station disinfected after. Twice.”

Tiffany snorted from the back wall.

“It wipes off.”

“Ma’am, you don’t have to—”

“Please,” I said. “Sit.”

He lowered himself into the chair like he was afraid of it. He sat on the very edge. His back didn’t even touch.

I took a black cape off the hook and shook it out. I swung it around him and fastened it at the back of his neck. My fingers brushed the skin above his collar. It was warm and rough.
